A 'Geopark' is a geographical area where geological heritage sites are part of a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. The site needs to be accessible to visitors and be managed by a formal body in a park like manner.
Langkawi Island meets the membership criteria and became a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks assisted by UNESCO in 2007
As of August 2008, there are 57 National Geoparks in 18 member countries. At present China has the largest entries (20 sites), followed by the UK (7) and Germany (6). Malaysia and China are the only Asian countries which make it to the member list.
